Every time an American between the ages of 15 and 17 is arrested, the future of that young person becomes bleak. Once a young person is kept in temporary custody in order to rehabilitate, or in some cases to be taken to prison once they turn 18; a lot of things can go wrong. But that there are activities such as reading and sports that can change that. Reading literature is touted as one of the best ways prison authorities can use to mold the character of a young person convicted of a misdemeanor or felony. Novels, short stories, and non-fiction books all can influence a young mind to think differently. In some cases mold them to be emphatic, remorseful, and responsible adults.
However, for any book to achieve any of the aforementioned goals it needs to possess the following:
1.A book needs to be well-written
A book is not likely to make any impact unless on a young mind unless it is well-written, preferably in a language that a young person can understand. Also, the book needs to explore a subject matter that is of interest to young people. If it’s fiction, for instance, a book written for teens shouldn’t be preachy but entertaining.
2. A book needs to teach juveniles something
For a book in order to help young people to become better adults, its core message should cover life skills, career goals, and life lessons. If it’s a non-fiction book, it would help if the author of the book highlights skills convicts can use after serving their prison term. It should give prisoners hope that it’s possible to make a living without committing a crime.
